Ha, poor guy. Hard to blame him when there is SO much information out there about buying a diamond. I think you're right that you're buying the diamond, not the certificate, and you have to love what you buy. At the same time, an certificate's description of a stone's properties can help determine the price of the diamond. Knowing that, I would want the most accurate certificate possible. So, to answer his question, GIA grading is stricter, more accurate and more trustworthy than other labs. The certificate isn't everything when making a diamond purchase, but it's an important part of being informed in my opinion.

Some of your readers may not know about another C to consider when making their decision - Canadian! Canada has several diamond mines, diamond polishing facilities, and a system in place to laser on an ID number as a permanent identifier. Maybe this guy subconsciously knew there was something he was missing in his search for the "best" diamond! I blogged about it at my blog post of Feb 21 as www.madellemorgan.com, but he could also check out http://www.canadiandiamondcodeofconduct.ca/EN_consumer_information.htm
