Finding your partner's finger size for an engagement ring may not be on the top of your "must haves" list, but it looms large when you don't have a clue what it is.   Picture this: you've found the perfect ring, you're ready to buy it, and then your Jewelry Sales Associate drops the bombshell question, "Do you know her finger size?"

Damn. Panic sets in, but it doesn't have to, because there are a few solutions that don't need to get in the way of her dream ring. If you're just starting to talk about getting married and the subject turns to rings, that's exactly the time to ask her directly. It won't ruin the surprise, I promise. Remember to write it down so you won't forget. Another option is to suggest a fun trip to the jewelry store together, where she can get sized and create a wish list. Win-win.

But what if you want to surprise her without tipping her off? Fear not. You can propose first and resize the ring later. It's not ideal, but it works.  Every time. Or try tracing a ring she wears on her left ring finger and take it to a jeweler for measurement.  (Be cool though.  Go to the place you're buying the ring from.)  If that doesn't work, trace a right hand ring that she wears on her ring finger, and be sure to let the jeweler know it's not from her left hand ring finger.

If you're feeling brave, involve a trusted friend who can casually bring up ring sizes in conversation and gather the info for you. Sneaky, but effective. And if all else fails, slide her ring onto your finger, snap a pic, and show it to a jeweler. They'll help you figure out the correct size.

Remember, even if the ring doesn't fit perfectly when you propose, it can always be resized. Focus on the love and the moment, and don't let the size stress you out. The symbolism of the ring is something that will travel with you through life, and it's the most important part of all of this.  If it doesn't fit out of the gate?  Meh.  You can always have it sized after the fact.
